Leica and Huawei to setup R&D center to work on optical and software systems

Huawei is bringing its partnership with Leica to the next level as both companies announced that they will be setting up a R&D center to work on optical and software systems.

The R&D center is called the Max Berek Innovation Lab and will be built at Leica’s headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany. The R&D center will accelerate development of optical systems and software-based technologies to improve image quality in mobile apps. In addition, both companies plan to work with German and international universities and research institutions on the creation of computational imaging, augmented reality and virtual reality solutions.

This announcement came 7 months after both companies made a joint announcement of a long-term partnership to “reinvent” smartphone photography. Leica was “deeply involved” in the development of the camera module for the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus.
