ASUS shaves off the millimeters on its new ZenBook Flip S convertible notebook

ASUS ZenBook Flip S

ASUS today announced a brand new convertible notebook in the ZenBook Flip S, a svelte device that boasts a deliciously thin form factor and competitive specifications.

At just 10.9mm thick, ASUS says this is the world’s thinnest convertible laptop, and it bears the signature design of the ZenBook series, like the pattern of concentric circles on the lid, a rich Royal Blue color (it is also available in Smokey Grey), and gold-accented edges.

Convertibles like the ZenBook Flip S combine the versatility of a 2-in-1 device like the Transformer 3 Pro with the functionality of a full-fledged laptop, and you’ll never have to worry about issues stemming from a detachable keyboard.

Instead, the display folds around neatly, quickly turning what was previously a regular laptop into a tablet. You can also use it in a variety of modes, such as in tent mode for when you’re watching movies.

Here’s a quick overview of its specifications:

  • 13.3-inch 1,920 x 1,080 / 3,840 x 2,160-pixel display
  • Intel Core i5-7200U (2.5GHz, 3MB L3 cache) / Core i7-7500U processor (2.7GHz, 4MB L3 cache)
  • Up to 16GB of LPDDR3 2,133MHz RAM
  • Up to a 1TB PCIe SSD
  • 311.3 x 211.8 x 10.9mm
  • 1.1kg

To help keep the weight down, ASUS opted for a light aerospace-grade aluminum chassis and an ultra-thin vapor chamber cooling system.

The 13.3-inch display features thin 6.11mm bezels that further help reduce the notebook’s footprint, and it will work with the bundled ASUS Pen. Creative types will appreciate this, especially given the new features bundled into the Windows 10 Creators Update, such as the Paint 3D application and improved Windows Ink functionality.

The ASUS Pen supports up to 1,024 levels of pressure and can read between 10 and 300g of force, and while it isn’t quite as precise on paper as rival offerings like the new Surface Pen, it should serve its purpose well enough.

The ZenBook Flip S will retail at a starting price of US$1,099. We’ll update when we have news on local availability.
